In my sculptural work I use wheel thrown forms and manipulate them to resemble human bodily features. I am interested in how the human anatomy would be translated to a clay vessel. I see similarities in how the process of making these sculptures can both fail and amaze just as the human body does. Other pieces take on human personalities. I am interested in how these forms interact with each other and how that affects the viewer.
In my functional I enjoy the balance of what can be controlled and can not in the process. I use a technique called Naked Raku where the smoke seeps into the cracks of a glaze and slip layer to stain the naked clay surface to create natural and spontaneous lines. It gives the piece an energy and excitement that reflects my experience with the process.
