Long Term Self- Assignment: “Analyzing Nude Photography"

The inspiration for this analysis stemmed from being a gallery monitor at the Center for Creative Photography. During the last three exhibitions, entitled Ralph Gibson and Lustrum Press 1970-1985, Making a Photograph, and Debating Modern Photography: The Triumph of Group f/64, nude portraiture has been on display. While on duty I noticed that aside from the occasional immature grade school and high school students, who upon seeing the nudity excitedly giggled, sneered, and whispered amongst themselves, adults also lacked a certain understanding for the subject matter. With distaste they either silently furrowed their brows or professed aloud their consideration for it being pornographic to another. My hope is to change their reaction by analyzing the various applications of nudity within photography. I realize some consider any use of nudity as morally irreprehensible, but I hope to educate those who are receptive yet unaware of its uses...(contact me for greater detail or interest in participation)
