My paintings are visual records of what I see in nature and the world around me. I want to capture a moment in time or a feeling that I get when I see something extraordinarily beautiful. Often what I paint is not even something that is necessarily beautiful but when seen through my eyes it becomes beautiful to me. My favorite medium is watercolor mostly because of the ephemeral quality that you can get with such a translucent medium yet if needed you can get a bold application of saturated color. I carry my watercolors with me when I travel to make quick studies of whatever intrigues me.
I have always been inspired by the watercolors of John Singer Sargent. For many years I was only familiar with his exquisite oil paintings but then I found a book on his watercolors and I was captivated by the manner in which he could capture the pure essence of a scene.
