JOANA UBACH
Joana Ubach

My work is culturally and socially motivated but rarely political. My motivation comes from my background in cultural anthropology and my international field research with the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA). This research allowed me to study the various societal responses to problems due to distinct historical events, values, art, and religion interactions. My fascination with cultural differences and understanding human individuality and uniqueness influences my work.

I also take an introspective approach to my work to convey universal emotions. Most of my work focuses on depicting emotions; people’s thoughts, feelings and sensations that make individuals unique within a stage of that person’s life in a specific context.

Recently the combination of two mediums, aluminum and oil, has allowed me to expand the range of expressions that I try to convey. In this medium the dynamic between the placement of lights, the location of the observer, and the properties of the art piece adds an extra dimension to each piece. I feel that this medium and technique has undeveloped potential that I intend to continue exploring. I believe that I am ready to move beyond the experimental stage and begin to use this medium to effectively realize more conceptual pieces.

My interest in this technique is an example of my general approach, which is to experiment with media and find new ways to connect with the viewer.
