Artist Statement Kate Walker

I aim to find the intersections between my everyday experiences, cultural history and current political realities by focusing on specific events, places and issues. Excavating the buried and making visible the invisible are important to my working practice. My visual language is made up of the overlooked and profane – the objects and sign systems which fill our visual field but which receive little attention. These are transformed and refigured in paint to present a collapsing of time and space, fact and fiction in order to create new meanings and cultural insights. Paint as a language, a metaphor which conveys its own meanings based on its inherent properties, is an ongoing source of my engagement with this medium.
